What counts as an email?

One API call that queues a message counts as one, whether it goes to a single recipient or to several via cc and bcc. A batch request counts as one per message in the batch. Test-mode sends, which go only to your own inbox, are capped separately per day and do not touch your monthly allowance — so you can iterate on an integration without spending anything.

What happens when I hit the limit?

Your monthly allowance is not a cliff. Sends keep going out past it, up to 110% of the limit, and your application is told over a quota.exceeded webhook as soon as you cross. This is transactional email — stopping a password reset dead is an outage, not a billing control. Past the grace band, sends are refused with a clear error rather than being silently dropped or billed as overage, so you will never receive a surprise invoice. Upgrading takes effect immediately and the new monthly allowance applies to the rest of the current month.

Do new accounts get the full limit straight away?

Not on day one. A new account starts at 100 recipients a day on a paid tier — recipients, not API calls, so one message to fifty people spends fifty — and reaches its plan's full daily figure over its first week of sending. New accounts are also reviewed before they can email addresses outside their own verified domains, which usually takes a few hours — you can build and test the whole integration against your own domain while you wait. We send on a shared reputation, so a new account is bounded until we have looked at it. Both limits lift on request if you are launching to a known volume.

What if I downgrade?

Nothing is deleted. If the lower tier allows fewer domains or webhooks than you are using, the excess is suspended rather than removed — the domain keeps its verification and its DNS records, and comes straight back if you upgrade again. You choose which ones stay active.

Is the free tier a trial?

No. It does not expire and it does not need a card. It is a real tier with the same API, the same delivery tracking and the same webhooks as the paid ones — just a smaller allowance. Plenty of side projects never need to leave it.
